The sculpture

Vasco Nasorri uses various techniques to realize his sculptures. He uses clay mostly, probably, because Vasco started as a ceramist and finds in the “clay” the first instrument to express his creativity. With this material it is possible to model bas-relieves, sculptures of all sizes and whatever the imagination or instinct suggests. Clay is mostly used in realizing vases and tiles, but its plascity makes it also and ideal instrument to give body and form to the artist’s emotions. It is very interesting to observe the birth of a sculpture. The passage from an idea, the movement of the hands while modelling the clay, to the final product is quick.
External tools are not necessary to model clay. The use of the hands in modelling clay increases the artist’s sensibility.
These clay forms, baked at 900° C for twelve hours, become terracotta or else transformed into bronze or plaster casts. “Bronze”, an ancient alloy of copper and tin, will last throughout the centuries. Transforming a sculpture or bas-relief into bronze means that you consider it worthy to last through the centuries, as artists in the past have done with their art pieces.

The metal, if correctly used, is capable to give highlights and plascity to the forms as well as reveal particular aesthetics that other wise would remain hidden.
The fusion technique preferred is “cire perdue” which is done using methods that founder masters used 2000 years ago. This method is capable to transfer onto metal every small detail that the artist originally does to the model. The fusion process of a sculpture, that Vasco personally does, is complex, fascinating and requires all the experience that an artist has accumulated over the years. We begin by making rubber moulds and then pass on to the construction of the “cire” that reproduces the original model. Canals (always in cire) are applied to this reproduction that allow the liquefied metal to fill the model as well as letting air and steam out preventing stagnation bubbles.

This is the phase where mastery and experience are necessary. If not properly done, in the final product, sometimes permanently, every error will standout. Pouring the fusion into the cast and seeing the sculpture that takes form is a magic moment. The artist, once everything is cooled down, brings to light his sculpture. He first removes the refractory material and once cleaned he glazes it with oxides and fire giving it colour and shine.
Sculpturing is also the research of different materials and shapes that can be used. Vasco is constantly searching and exploring new techniques and materials. Marble, for example, is cold and hostile but once sculptured and finely worked becomes alive.
In this page we will observe a few sculptures that Vasco has done recently, but this catalogue is destined to be modified as the activity of the sculptor grows.
